The last night

14 Aug
I’m lying on my futon, on our last night in Japan, head swimming with three years of planning and dreaming, nine months, thirty eight weeks, two hundred and eighty something days of travelling.  It’s over and all that’s left is for us to get to the airport and fly home.
I’m tired.  Three weeks on futons, moving every few days and carrying all our stuff from station to ryokan to station again, has taken it’s toll.  So tired that it’s hard to fish into my soupy brain and find any thing else.  Excitement is in there somewhere.  In less than twenty four hours I’ll be seeing people I’ve spent months missing, I’ve discovered that it’s not easy to be away from the people you love and soon I won’t have to be.  There’s relief.  The previous nine months haven’t always been easy, but we’ve stuck with it.  I am proud, of us all.  I’m sad too.  It’s been an amazing experience, one that not many people are lucky enough to have.  I’m sad that it’s over and our time is up.

There’s other stuff.  Stuff that’s not so comfortable to examine.  How hard it’s been, what the point of it was, how it might not be easy to settle back home, whether it was a good idea in the first place.  I’m not sure how I feel about any of that, and I think it’ll take a while before I do.  For now, I know that people have been kind, we’ve been lucky on the disaster front and we’ve done some incredible things.  It wasn’t half bad.

Life continues to be a journey whether you’re traveling or not…

Wow, you did it. We are now on our travels too, and although we only travelled for 2 months (10 months to go) I know what you mean when you say you’re tired.
I wish you and your family all the best. I guess you’ll see the benefits of your adventure when you’ve settled back in.

I think travelling is uniquely tiring, and with children even more so, but it’s worth it. Make sure you have plenty of rest days, so that you don’t get burnt out too quickly!

Thank you very much, I intend to carry on with the blog for a bit, because I feel like I didn’t say everything I wanted to at the time and am keen to record certain things for myself as much as anyone else. When the children are back at school…

    Victoria,

You will miss it dearly, but nothing will compare to being back home in your bed and or the joy to see your kids opening their boxes and rediscovering their toys.

You will ALWAYS think back and ask whether it was worth it and if you will have the energy to do it again with 3 young children.

But this much is sure – It will define who you and your family are for the rest of your lives and you will celebrate the memories everyday.

I am so glad you stuck it out and it was such joy reading your blog.

You are absolutely right, and I think that the benefits of all of this will become clear in ways that we never anticipated over the coming months and years. I don’t regret a second of it.

One question: if I gave you the money would you turn around and do it all again?

      if she won’t – I will.

        Oi, that’s my money!

Actually no. I am very happy that we did it, and don’t regret a second of it, and would do it for the first time again, but I wouldn’t go again for such a long time. If you gave me the money, I’d travel for two months of every year, but sadly from a work/school/house point of view, that’s not really possible. Unless you gave me the money…

I have loved following you on your trip. I definitely think you should go away for 2 months of every year. This would please me and mean that I can continue to live my travels round the world through you COUGH.
