A short list of things I’ve learnt this week

19 Dec
  1. I’m not a fan of campsite shower blocks.  Especially those with a sign asking you to keep the doors closed so that the pipes don’t freeze.
  2. The Maori name for New Zealand’s tallest mountain, Mt Cook, is Aoraki, which means cloud piercer.  Apt.
  3. New Zealand’s museums and visitor centres are utterly fantastic.
  4. Sir Edmund Hillary took tinned pineapple and tractors to the Antarctic.
  5. Penguins are the only creatures other than humans that walk upright.
  6. Flip flops are called jandals in New Zealand.
  7. Maori women used to prove their bravery by tattooing themselves using charcoal and sharp thorns.  It’s not a good idea to tell my children this.

I knew 6 of those! And feel extreme empathy with you on the first one…
My OH & I went to NZ for our honeymoon and loved it, it is so ‘awesome!’
*waves* at you from a cold and snowy blighty, hope you have a merry christmas and a brilliant new year!

See such an educational trip, the children would never learn this at school, ditch those lessons now!
