Self Portrait

18 May

I both love and hate this week’s Gallery prompt, Self Portrait.  I am the photographer in the family and never let anyone else play with my lovely Nikon.  I also hate having my photo taken for reasons that aren’t entirely clear to me.  As a result, there are virtually no photos of me in existence after the age of about 14.  Even the wedding photo I chose to display in our house is a view of my back.  But I liked Tara’s reasons very much, and she is right, our children should have pictures of us.

I know this is supposed to be a self portrait, but I cheated.  The children took these pictures.  But here’s my reasoning: I grew them and gave birth to them, so they are part of me.  Therefore if they take my picture, it’s a self portrait.  I knew that philosophy degree would come in useful one day.  So here you are, six for the price of one…

I feel like I’ve been very brave!

    You lovely lady!

      Too kind.

They’re really good! I know exactly what you mean about photos. I absolutely hate photos of me. I hate being filmed and I hate photos. Ironic when my day-job used to be putting other people in front of the tv cameras or in the newspaper! I think your pix are lovely. We should have all taken pix of each other at the Reading tweetup

I’m kind of glad we didn’t though. I look rough enough two days later. I felt like putting a disclaimer about the bags under my eyes, saying it was all your fault!

I love the “surprised” (or is it “shouting loudly”) one 😀
    Ace photos, Vic 🙂

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 18/05/2010 at 4:33 pm #

There was a proper shouting one. I left that out. Not very pretty!

I love that your kids took the photos – I often wonder how my kids really see me. Also good to put a face to a blog – makes you more real!

My daughter kept saying “are you going to take a picture of me now?” Clearly she’s not that bothered about having pictures of her mother!

Having met you at last I understand these photos. I’m with you on not liking my picture taken but it has to be done for posterity if nothing else!

Ooh, I love it! I wish Little Miss could take a picture! I might hand over the camera after all! Will see…I had a post planned but now you may have inspired me differently! 😉
    Thanks lovely…you’re beautiful!

I LOVE these. Kid’s eye view is fantastic! You look very lovely and I wish I had been able to make it to Reading! I have a photo somewhere of bump number 3 taken by DS1,it is my chin downwards and I love it!

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 19/05/2010 at 10:20 am #

I have a portrait of bump number 3 too. My eldest drew a picture of me with a big round tummy and a little baby inside. I’ve framed it.

these are always the hardest ones…
I tell everyone: my place is behind the camera… 🙂

They are, but my mother also takes all the photos in our family so we have very few pictures of her. One of my most precious things is a photo that her friend took of her years ago, it’s gorgeous.

Thank you, it would be hard to pose artificially when my children are holding my beloved iPhone!

It’s a WordPress feature, was very easy, I’ve used it a few times now because I really like it.

Great idea to do a slideshow 🙂

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 19/05/2010 at 9:54 am #

then at least no one picture can be studied in too much depth!

  15. Heather Davis 19/05/2010 at 10:57 am #

What lovely pictures. They really capture the essence of you. The slideshow is a very clever idea too. Just general greatness I think! Hx

Thank you 🙂 I think it’s easy to be relaxed infront of your children in a way it’s not infront of others.

Your children are quite a dab hand with the camera – following in their Mum’s footsteps. You’re right about the lack of photos as a teenager – I destroyed nearly all mine and now I regret it. My kids would have loved to have seen me as a mod and a moody new romantic. Lovely pics!

  17. sister3 19/05/2010 at 4:51 pm #

I like it, very good idea and presentation !
I hate pictures of me too, but I try to keep one or two of each events !
because souvenirs are not always wonderful, but always important !

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 19/05/2010 at 5:16 pm #

I’ve found it quite liberating. I always avoid it, but actually, I’m quite relaxed today, I even think the one of me smiling is quite nice.

  18. Michelle 19/05/2010 at 5:13 pm #

    They’re great! You look lovely:-)

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 19/05/2010 at 5:15 pm #

      thank you 🙂

      It was actually quite fun.

  20. CanCan 20/05/2010 at 9:49 am #

My favorite is the “surprised” look.

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 20/05/2010 at 10:43 am #

They told me to make faces!

  21. Michelle (Utterlyscrummy) 20/05/2010 at 2:43 pm #

Ooh, I love these. You look about twelve, though. Do you have a portrait in the attic?

    • itsasmallworldafterallfamily 22/05/2010 at 2:49 pm #
