Not a pretty sight

6 Apr

Germany has many redeeming features: chips sprinkled with paprika and served with a dollop of mayo being one, extensive off-road cycle routes and drivers who actually slow down for children being two more.

But some things I just don’t get.  The obsession with rule following which means you have to insert your ticket in to a turnstile to both enter AND exit the swimming pool was particularly irksome.  Especially when a certain person didn’t understand the instructions and therefore didn’t look after said tickets.

And for a country with so many rules, how come you are allowed to smoke EVERYWHERE.  Not only can you smoke in restaurants, airports and shops but you can also buy fags on almost every street corner.  Yes, that picture above is of a cigarette vending machine, on the corner of an ordinary residential street.  Lovely.  I do like a country where you can buy fags every 200 metres, day or night.  Unsurprisingly, there are very high numbers of smokers or maybe it just seems that way, because they are everywhere.  Blowing stinky smoke on your chips, having a puff by the side of the swimming pool or taking a quick cigarette break at work.  Like this fireman.  Hmmm.

This post for written for The Gallery at Sticky Fingers.  This week’s theme is ‘Ugly’.

It looks like it’s grown out of the hedge!

    Okay here goes:

This post is neither good, nor particularly bad. Your writing is passable and your photography is adequate.

How’s that. Mediocre enough for you?

PS: Will I get points out of ten for mediocrity?

That is a 10/10 for mediocracy. 5/10 for harshness. You could have been meaner…

The old cigarette machine. Until my parents retired a few years ago, they and my brother ran their own business in rural Australia. At one point, they decided (or were persuaded, I’m not sure) to install a cigarette machine. It didn’t bring them much at all in revenue; it was largely for the convenience of passing workers who had asked for it. From memory, their shop was broken-in to four times after that. The thief/thieves only stole cigarettes. They’d never had a break-in before the machine and they never had one again after it was removed. Thank you for your pictures – great subject.

In the UK they are a common fixture in pubs but I don’t ever remember seeing them on the street. And you can buy fags from most newsagents over here. Luckily where to buy fags is not something I need to worry about.

As with many things Germany runs a little behind on the rest of us…

The banking system is also frustratingly behind the UK.
