The voices in my head, part 2

27 Jan

OK, so you’re being selfish. But a happy mother makes a happy family, right? And it’s not as if you’re committing grand larceny, you’re just having a long holiday.

There’s no doubt that the children are young. But surely that’s a good reason to be spending time with them? You won’t get these years back.

You’ve travelled with Steve before, admittedly for weeks not months at a time. Travelling together can be challenging, but will it really be more challenging than watching your infant son wired up to drips and monitors?

Tropical illnesses ARE scary. But you can vaccinate, cover up and take pills. You are lucky to have these choices, many mothers don’t.

OK, so the children will miss school. But instead of learning about rainforests, they will be experiencing them. Leeches and all.

Coming back WILL be hard. But you will have created a family memory bank to sustain you for years to come.

And you could always start planning another trip.

This post is part of the writing workshop at Sleep is for the Weak. Josie asked ‘What have the voices in your head been saying lately?’
