Travel Rules

20 Oct

Taking nine months away from school, work and housewifery will be a welcome opportunity to float along without too many rules for a while.  But as everyone with small children knows, a few boundaries here and there are a GOOD THING, so I’ve written some house rules for when we are not in our house:

  • Everyone needs to walk for themselves and carry their own bag.  It’s hard enough for Mummy and Daddy to cart huge rucksacks about without having small people hanging off our legs.  We will try to make sure you don’t have to walk too far or get too tired.
  • I know sleeping all together in a hotel room is very exciting.  Please don’t let that stop you from going to sleep until the early hours.  We will try and make sure that wherever we sleep, bedtimes are calm and cosy.
  • On a similar theme, yes, light switches are a marvellous invention, and yes, having a light switch right next to your bed is fabulous, but that doesn’t mean that you need to switch it on in the middle of the night.
  • Please do not ask to buy something every time we pass a shop as a) we are travelling on a buget; b) we have to carry everything we buy on our backs; and c) it’s very tiresome for all involved that Mummy and Daddy keep having to say NO.
  • Inevitably there will be days when we are all tired and scratchy, adults included.  Please can we try to not take it out on each other.  This is supposed to be a holiday.
  • Speaking of which, here’s my final rule: this is the chance of a lifetime, let’s not forget to appreciate how lucky we are and make sure that we have fun!

This post was inspired by Josie at Sleep is for the Weak’s writing workshop.  Take a look to read other posts, or find out how you can take part next week.

If I promise to abide by the rules can I come along? It is all so exciting!

You are welcome to come, as long as you carry your own luggage!

        Oh, and babysit occasionally.

Am I allowed to apply these rules to a two week holiday too? Especially the light switch one!

Every time I think about you all going off on your adventures I get all goosepimply. So excited for you.

Very excellent rules. I would like to add one though (on behalf of the mini-Wallops) – you must all eat ice cream every day…

Now why didn’t I think of that rule? It’s definitely being added to the list!
